La Romana

Lingering along the riverbanks

Visitors to La Romana, 115 km east of Santo Domingo, can enjoy the blossoming Bayahibe beach resort just down the road, and the glamorous Casa de Campo complex, which also lies nearby just waiting to be discovered on an MSC Caribbean and Antilles excursion.
However, with some appealing riverside restaurants and its proximity to sights such as Isla Catalina and the Cueva de las Maravillas, it’s well worth visiting La Romana itself during your Caribbean holiday, which is also well placed as a stop-off between Santo Domingo and the beaches on the east coast.

La Romana downtown with its tidy streets lined with potted palms – combined with a sprinkling of cosy cafés, good bars and one or two excellent places to eat – make it a pleasant place to hang out. From most parts of the centre, however, the river is unfortunately hidden from view and its banks are not easily accessible.

The delightfully shaded Parque Central is, instead, the major meeting place, dotted with an eclectic mix of metal sculptures and fibreglass statues of former local baseball heroes. You can check out the current crop of players during the winter fixtures at the Estadio Francisco Micheli, home field of Los Toros del Este, which is located at Abreu and Luperón towards the western end of town. Just west of the arena the municipal market sells bountiful produce and meat; look also for the small botánicas selling various items related to Vodú Dominicana.

  • MARAVILLAS CAVE & SAN PEDRO

    AKTIV & ÄVENTYR

    LRM09

After leaving the port, an air-conditioned coach will first take you on a pleasant 30-minute drive to the Cueva de las Maravillas - the Cave of Miracles – which is situated roughly midway between the seaside resorts of La Romana and San Pedro de Macoris. A happy coincidence saw a group of boy scouts (re-)discover the caves in 1926, since when much development work has made a significant portion of the much larger cave complex accessible to the public. The caves are not only home to stalactites and stalagmites as well as a crystal-clear underground pool, but also – and perhaps most importantly – to a large number of ancient and almost perfectly preserved rock paintings left by the island’s native Taíno people. Neither photography SWE filming is permitted in the caves. The next leg will see you re-board the coach and head to the Cigar Factory, an internationally renowned manufacturer that is famous for its exquisite hand-rolled cigars. Prepare to be amazed at the deftness and lightning speed with which the factory workers roll these cigars. Then it’s on to the lovely seaside town of San Pedro de Macoris, which was founded in the early 19th century by European immigrants and then boomed in the early 20th century when the price of sugar soared on the market. During the 30-minute drive back to the port a stop will be made for you to do some shopping.

    • HIGUEY & BAYAHIBE

      KULTUR OCH HISTORIA

      LRM07

This two-in-one tour begins with a scenic 45-minute drive in an air-conditioned coach through the sugarcane fields to the city of Higüey, which was founded in 1494 and whose cityscape is dominated by the famous Catholic Basilica of La Altagracia. Finished in 1971, the basilica has since become a popular pilgrimage site and also boasts beautiful stained-glass windows, which really come to life in the bright Caribbean sun. We will visit the nearby Altagracia Museum and see their collection of historic, artistic, and sacred objects from the 17th thru the 20th centuries. Next up is the fort at San Rafael de Yuma, once the residence of the city’s first goverSWE and now home to a cornucopia of early 16th-century artefacts. The last stop on the tour is the unspoiled fishing village of Bayahibe, which lies on the shores of a turquoise lagoon, a place of great natural beauty and tranquillity.

      • SANTO DOMINGO COLONIAL TOUR - LUNCH INCLUDED

        KULTUR OCH HISTORIA

        LRM19

Santo Domingo is not only the capital of the Dominican Republic, but also prides itself in being the first city in the New World to have been founded by a European. The year was 1496 and the man responsible was Bartholomew Columbus, Christopher’s younger brother. Your historical tour begins with a drive to the capital for a first photo stop at the Columbus Lighthouse, a modern building inaugurated in 1992 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas. The lighthouse is also the final resting place of the remains of Christopher Columbus. Moving on, you’ll then walk through the Zona Colonial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the most impressive buildings from the colonial era. On the itinerary are the early 16th-century Alcázar de Colón, the 18th-century Panteón Nacional – a mausoleum where the remains of notable writers, politicians and Dominican heroes are interred – and Santo Domingo’s main thoroughfare, the Calle Las Damas. Next up is a visit to the 16th-century Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la MeSWE, the first Catholic diocese to be set up in the New World, followed by a buffet lunch. To round off your outing, you’ll also have some time to go shopping before you return to your ship. Please note: guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. To visit the cathedral, guests are required to ensure shoulders and knees are covered; guests wearing tank tops or mini-skirts will not be permitted to enter the cathedral.

      • THE VILLAGE OF ALTOS DE CHAVON

        STADSUTFLYKT

        LRM04

Situated only a short drive from the port lies one of the most picturesque attractions in the Dominican Republic, the village of Altos de Chavón. This recreation of a medieval European village, inspired by the imagination of a former Hollywood film set designer, sits atop a plateau overlooking the enchanting Chavón River. As you stroll through the narrow, cobbled streets, the illusion of being transported back to a bygone age will be extremely convincing. Next to some beautiful Mediterranean-style architecture, the village also boasts a 5,000-seat open-air amphitheatre perched on the edge of a canyon as well as the pretty St. Stanislaus church, which you will have a chance to view from the outside. After some free time, board your bus for a jaunt to La Romana, where you will see sights such as the Santa Rosa Church, Town Hall, and Parque Duarte before heading back to the ship.

        Dominican Republic

        Where the sun always shines
        Where the sun always shines

A world-famous magnet for sun worshippers, the Dominican Republic is the Caribbean’s most visited holiday destination – yet it still holds plenty of surprises.

There’s the geographic diversity, for starters – how many outsiders know that the country boasts five distinct mountain ranges, seemingly endless swathes of rainforest, regions of cactus-strewn semi-desert, plus the Caribbean’s largest metropolis, highest peak and biggest lake? Or that the capital, Santo Domingo, is the oldest colonial city in the Americas? For a country significantly smaller than Scotland, it certainly packs a lot in. A cruise to the Dominican Republic will take you to its celebrated coastline – all 1000km and more of it – where you can count on hundreds of beautiful, white-sand beaches, 166km of coral reefs and 325 square kilometres of mangroves.

Besides rainforest there are vast tracts of pine forest, much of which can be found in the country’s many national parks and nature reserves. Occupying gentler plots of land are the manicured greens of over 25 designer golf courses, complementing the countless locations for other outdoor pursuits, including one of the world’s best kitesurfing spots in Cabarete, and the largest breeding ground for the North Atlantic humpback whale population in the Samaná Bay, providing the scene for some of the most unforgettable nautical excursions anywhere.
