And we let children be our voice in celebrating.

It was 2009 when MSC Cruises and UNICEF joined forces for the Get on Board for Children initiative, which empowers every guest to make a contribution to UNICEF.

Now, after 6 years, we are proud to announce that 4 million Euros have been raised all over the world.
This ground-breaking achievement was celebrated during a ceremony held at EXPO Milano 2015, in the presence of UNICEF, hundreds of children and visitors from all over the world, handing the symbolic cheque of €4 millions over to Philippe Baud, Deputy Director of UNICEF Switzerland.

How did we get so far?

Early in 2014, “Get on Board for Children” was expanded with a new life-saving initiative to provide assistance to malnourished children by delivering Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) – such as Plumpy’Nut® – to treat severe malnutrition in developing countries.
To this day, more than 1.3 million Euros was dedicated to help children and their families in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia and Nepal.

And this has resulted in “saving the lives of thousands of children, giving them a healthy start in life,” said Elsbeth Müller, executive director of the Swiss Committee for UNICEF.

However big it may seem, we are not surprised about our guests’ generosity: those who love to travel, love the whole world, too- especially children in need.

Indeed, besides our fundraising operations, we ran several educational and information events onboard.

Over the years, MSC Cruises’ collaboration has provided several UNICEF projects with funds to combat poverty and inequality as well as, from 2009 to 2013, malaria in some parts of the world. Close to €2.6 million was used in various projects in Brazil to help children in 126 vulnerable communities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo gain access to a quality education. In addition, part of that amount was  used to fight malaria in high-burden countries such as Mauritania, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Comoros.

But when it comes to saving lives, you can’t ever be contempt, so stay tuned for our next projects and don’t forget to support us the next time you hop on board!
