Civitavecchia/Rome

Uncovering a thousand years of history

The port of Civitavecchia is one of the largest in Italy and is, of course, a destination of MSC Cruises in the Mediterranean. Civitavecchia enjoys a millenary history due to its coves along the coast, which offered a perfect shelter for vessels, making it a natural port long before cruise ships sailed the seas, and in fact the port was known to the Romans as Centumcellae.

During your holiday in Civitavecchia you can easily visit its centre on foot. Amongst the most important monuments to visit are the Forte Michelangelo, built by Bramante in the 16th century, the ancient walls of the old port, where there is a fountain in travertine marble by Vanvitelli, and the Rock, an inexpugnable fortress that has been looming over the city and port for over a thousand years.

In Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Civitavecchia’s main square, one can admire the majestic baroque cathedral dedicated to St. Francis, built at the end of the 18th century on a smaller church which could no longer host a rapidly growing community.

Piazza Leandra, set in the historic centre, is a typical Italian piazza with a fountain in the centre, dedicated to Leandro, an elderly seaman of the Middle Ages who convinced his fellow citizens to settle on the Mediterranean coast in spite of the incursions by Saracen pirates.

There are a host of bars and restaurants for a taste of seafood cuisine, from poached baby octopus to fried rocket to stuffed squid or the pizza alla civitavecchiese with anchovies and garlic. The Taurine Baths, of the even more ancient Etruscan period, are a grand archaeological site just a few kilometres outside the city, a site that we recommend to the cruiser with a passion for ancient history.

  • GRAN TOUR OF ROME, THE ETERNAL CITY

    KULTUR OCH HISTORIA

    CIV07

This excursion combines two of the most important aspects of Rome: Christianity and antiquity. Bus transfer to Rome (1.5 hours) to meet our guide and start the tour with a visit to the Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre. We will look around this impressive edifice, built to hold up to 50.000 people and where the Romans used to watch the cruel gladiators combats. The tour continues with a stroll around Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, an ancient temple built in honour of seven important Roman deities. Stop for lunch in a typical Italian restaurant. The afternoon will be for the home of Christianity as we pay a visit to St. Peter's Square: free time to explore the square or to visit the Basilica independently after receiving information from the guide outside the site. After leaving our guide in Rome, we will return to the port. Please note: guests using a wheelchair can take part, but they must be advised that this tour is almost entirely on foot; we do not recommend it to guests with walking difficulties. St. Peter’s Basilica and the Colosseum have ramps for wheelchair users. Gests using a wheelchair are advised that they must be accompanied by a paying helper to provide assistance with getting on and off the coach and that wheelchairs must be collapsible/foldable since the coach has neither a ramp nor a lift. Guests using a wheelchair who would like to participate in this tour are requested to contact the Shore Excursions’ Desk promptly once they are on board so that arrangements can be made. It may be dusk on autumn and winter calls while visiting some of the sites. Conservative attire recommended for visiting sites of religious importance. The restaurant lunch may be earlier or later depending on the day of call. St. Peter’s Basilica may close with very short notice for reasons beyond MSC’s control (Vatican’s programmes); have the opportunity to visit it during your free time reconfirmed during your cruise. There may be long queues to enter St. Peter’s Basilica.

    • ANGELS AND DEMONS

      STADSUTFLYKT

      CIV25

Dan Brown’s year 2000 blockbuster “Angels & Demons” tells a gripping tale set in the Eternal City involving murder, intrigue, a branded ambigram and the Illuminati. Regardless of whether you have read the book, you will get to retrace the footsteps of the book’s protagonist, Robert Langdon, to uncover some of Rome’s best-kept secrets on this all-day tour. Following a scenic drive from the port, you will meet your guide and begin to follow clues related to the four elements of fire, earth, water and air. Notable artwork plays a crucial role in the book’s twisted plot, so watch out for the Pantheon, Bernini’s Baroque Ecstasy of St. Teresa statue and further works in the 15th-century Basilica del Popolo as well as paintings by Raphael and Caravaggio. Once you have reached Navona Square, some free time will be yours to have lunch (at extra cost not covered by the price of the tour). Next up is the Castel Sant’Angelo, whose towering cylindrical walls date back to A.D. 139 and provide the setting for the book’s epilogue. In real life, the castle was originally the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian and later a fortress that protected incumbent Popes in the Middle Ages. Last up is St. Peter’s Basilica on St. Peter’s Square, where your guide will provide information before leaving you to explore the area or visit the basilica on your own. A chance to relax follows on the return drive to the port. Please note: during the autumn and the winter, it may be dusk when we visit some of the sites. Conservative attire recommended for visiting sites of religious importance. This tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair. St. Peter’s Basilica could be closed with very short notice for reasons beyond MSC’s control (Vatican’s programmes); have the opportunity to visit it during your free time reconfirmed during your cruise. There may be long queues to enter St. Peter’s Basilica. This tour is not available on calls falling on a Monday.

      • WALKING TOUR IN ROME

        STADSUTFLYKT

        CIV21

This no-filters, all-day tour of the Eternal City will first see you leave your ship, enjoy a 1.5-hour coach ride to meet your guide and then explore Rome’s iconic streets in the most direct way possible: on foot. First up is an outside look at the Colosseum, built between A.D. 70-80 and still the world’s largest amphitheatre, after which you’ll move on to the nearby ruins of the Roman Forum, once the centre of Roman public life. Moving on past Piazza Santi Apostoli, you will make your way to the butterfly-shaped Piazza di Spagna. Situated at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, home to the Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat) and surrounded by stunning Roman Baroque architecture, this is certainly one of Rome’s most iconic spots and a photo opportunity like no other. Following some time to call your own to go shopping or have lunch in one of the numerous nearby cafés, bars and restaurants (at extra cost not covered by the price of the tour), you’ll continue your walk past the Pantheon, one of Rome’s best-preserved ancient Roman temples, en route to your next highlight: the Roman Baroque Piazza Navona. Have your camera ready to snap some shots of its three wonderfully ornate fountains and capture the special magic of the square. After then bidding farewell to your friendly city guide, you will pick up your coach again for the return trip to the port and your ship. Please note: as this tour of Rome involves long periods of walking, it is unsuitable for guests with mobility problems or using a wheelchair. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Italy

      History, gastronomy and fashion
      History, gastronomy and fashion

A cruise to Italy is an emotional roller coaster. Rome is a tremendous city quite unlike any other, and in terms of historical sights outstrips everywhere else in the country by some way.

Liguria, the small coastal province along the north-west coast, has long been known as the “Italian Riviera” and is accordingly crowded with sun-seekers for much of the summer.
In Veneto the main focus of interest is, of course, Venice: a unique city, and every bit as beautiful as its reputation would suggest. Tuscany in central Italy represents perhaps the most commonly perceived image of the country, with its classic rolling countryside and the art-packed towns of Florence and Pisa.

The south proper begins with the region of Campania. Its capital, Naples, is a unique, unforgettable city, the spiritual heart of the Italian south. Puglia, the “heel” of Italy, has underrated pleasures, too, notably the landscape of its Gargano peninsula and the souk-like qualities of its capital, Bari.

As for Sicily, the island is really a place apart, with a wide mixture of attractions ranging from some of the finest preserved Hellenistic treasures in Europe, to a couple of Italy’s most appealing Mediterranean beach resorts in Taormina and Cefalù, not to mention some gorgeous upland scenery.
