Basseterre

Among elegant fabrics and green, rolling hills

In spite of its small size, holiday goers disembarking from an MSC cruise ship will not find Basseterre short of things to see.

The city’s two cathedrals, St. George’s Anglican Church and the Catholic Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in East Square Street, are at the top of the list.

On South Square Street, one can visit the Georgian House, one of the better-preserved examples of local 18th century architecture

Other intriguing destinations to visit during your holiday in St. Kitts are all outside the city. On the way to Old Road, you will come across Romney Manor, the home of the Caribbean Batik, where you can witness the birth of these hand-painted fabrics.

No cruise to the Caribbean with MSC could be complete without a visit to the old sugar plantation of Wingfield Estate, where you will be able to admire ruins and study the complex aqueduct constructed to bring water from the Wingfield River to the plantation, a one of a kind construction on St. Kitts. The 18th century Great House and its Botanical Garden are soothing to all of the senses. Admire the perfectly restored structures, the separate kitchen building made with lava rocks, the dining room that seats 16 and overlooks the ocean, and the bathing room with volcanic rocks for heating.

The even smaller Charlestown, is the capital of Basseterre’s sister island Nevis. Here, the churches of St. Paul and St. Thomas are a must-see. Both date back to the 17th century, as does the old Jewish cemetery in the city centre. Once here, don’t miss out on a visit to the Nelson Museum, from which you can continue to Saint John’s Fig Tree Church. Surrounded by gravestones, it holds the certificate of the marriage of Admiral Horacio Nelson to the Navisian Fanny Nisbet. The excursion concludes at the Great House of the Montpellier Plantation, where the two fell in love.

See the scenic sights of St. Kitts in the most leisurely way possible, first on board a narrow-gauge train –the “Last Railway in the West Indies” – and then on a catamaran. The St. Kitts’ Scenic Railway has been showing visitors the island since 2003, but before that enjoyed an almost 100-year career as the means by which sugarcane was transported from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre. But this is no ordinary narrow-gauge train, since it features a second open-sided observation deck from which you’ll be enjoying breezy island views all along the route. Unlimited complimentary beverages are served during the ride and your guide will provide information on the former sugar estates, abandoned windmills and chimneys you’ll pass on the way. Further points of interest included on the ride are the first British and French settlements in the Caribbean, places where native tribes once lived and the 17th-/18th-century Brimstone Hill Fortress, along with numerous others. At the end of your train ride, you’ll be transferred to the marina to board the catamaran for your coastal cruise. You’ll be sailing along the storied western coast of the island, with gorgeous views and a complimentary open bar to entertain you as you go. Your tour comes to an end with your return to the ship. Please note: the order in which the tour is run may be reversed. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes.

Touted to be the “Last Railway in the West Indies”, the St. Kitts scenic railway train has been acquainting visitors with the beauty of the island since 2003. Before that though, the line was used to transport sugarcane from the fields to the sugar mill in Basseterre, something the trains reliably did from 1912 onwards. The route will take you up along the gorgeous SWEth-eastern coastline, with you relaxing and enjoying unlimited complimentary drinks on board. Best of all, the ride comes with an unusual feature that promises to deliver both spectacular views and built-in air-conditioning: a second, open-sided deck. Superb views of the water, cliffs, lush vegetation, villages, canyons, sugarcane fields, rainforest and Mount Liamuiga looming in the distance unfold before your eyes as you travel on the double-decker train. Your on-board guide will alert you to and provide information on key points of interest, such as former sugar estates, abandoned windmills, chimneys, the first settlements of British and French colonialists, the places where native tribes once lived, the 17th-/18th-century Brimstone Hill Fortress and numerous other places of historical importance. The train ride will be followed by a coach ride along the island’s equally interesting and beautiful eastern seaboard before you return to the ship. Please note: the order in which the tour is run may be reversed. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes.

Your excursion gets off to a start with a driving tour of Basseterre. Basseterre, founded in 1625, later became the capital of St. Kitts in 1727. Historical Basseterre was first ruled by the French from the mid 1600’s to the early 1700’s when the English took over the reins of ownership. Efforts have been made to maintain aspects of Caribbean architecture that was greatly inspired by both the European and African heritage of the island. Stop at the Roman Catholic Co-Cathedral on your way to the next stop, Romney MaSWE, home of the world famous Caribelle Batik. Visit the demonstration room, where the acclaimed artists illustrate the wax and dye process of batik making. The Romney MaSWE Estate encompasses eight acres of historical ruins, ancient Carib Indian Rock drawings and a beautiful botanical garden. Then you will be transported back to your awaiting ship.

A golden opportunity to see the best of St. Kitts awaits you on this half-day tour, with a first stop at Romney MaSWE in Basseterre. Dating back to the 17th-century, this former sugar estate boasts nearly 5 hectares/12 acres of landscaped gardens and is also home to Caribelle Batik. The complex and highly artistic dyeing process that goes to produce beautiful batiks is carried out entirely by hand here – to stunning effect. Moving on, you’ll head out of town up to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 17th-/18th-century Brimstone Hill Fortress that oversees the surrounding area. The extremely well preserved site affords fabulous views of five neighbour isles, St. Kitts’ beautiful landscape and of the coastline – perfect for a photo or two. The history theme continues with a visit to the Fairview Great House, a card-carrying reminder of St. Kitts’ colonial era. Feast your eyes on stupendous vistas of the Caribbean Sea, the southeast peninsula and Nevis, St. Kitts’ sister isle, from the veranda, then explore the wide variety of flowering plants, fruit trees, palms and shrubs found in the well-established botanical gardens, whose oldest sections date back to the 1700s. As the tour winds down with a drive around Basseterre, watch out for its colonial architecture, old churches, cottages and even the site of a former slave market before you return to your ship. Please note: guests are recommended to wear light comfortable clothing and shoes, high-factor sunscreen and to bring a camera. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests using a wheelchair.

    Saint Kitts and Nevis

A former favourite location for the aristocracy
A former favourite location for the aristocracy

A cruise to St Kitts and Nevis will introduce you to two islands of the Caribbean which have been frequented by elite tourists for at least two hundred years; they were the destination for European nobility between the 19th and 20th century.

In St Kitts the beaches of the north-eastern coast are black volcanic sand while at Dieppe Bay, you can swim in calm waters that are protected by a great barrier reef, and if you want to experience the emotions of the Atlantic waves, warmed by the reef, you need to head for Half Moon Bay.

From the village of Sandy Point, on the north west coast, climbing the slopes of an ancient volcano, you reach Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. From this UNESCO protected site you can enjoy wonderful views which go as far as St Maarten and St Barthélemy.
At the same time you can admire the work and the tenacity of the English who built this polygonal fortress between the 18th and 19th century, known in its heyday as one of the Gibraltars of the West Indies (the other was the fort in Les Saints, Guadalupe).

On Nevis, try an excursion to the Nisbet Plantation, a historic manor now a hotel with a splendid beach and dwarf palms. Or treat yourself to a bath at the Bath House Hotel, the remains of the majestic thermal baths that served the nobility of the old continent in the 17th century.
