Cozumel

The land of the swallows

A forty-kilometre-long island directly off the coast from Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel is a renowned cruise-ship call: nearly every day, up to ten cruise ships dock at one of the island’s three dedicated piers, all just south of the only town, San Miguel.

A holiday to Mexico with MSC Cruises will present you with restaurants, souvenir shops and jewellery stores, all along the malecón (Av Rafael Melgar) in downtown San Miguel

If you fancy a museum, the attractive Museo de la Isla de Cozumel has small displays of the flora, fauna and marine life of the island, as well as a good collection of Maya artefacts and old photos.

If you’re not a diver, there’s a certain appeal in wandering the relaxed inland blocks of San Miguel, away from the piers, spotting Maya ruins and birds (the Maya called the island cuzamil – “land of the swallows”) in the dense forests and being the only person on the windswept eastern beaches.

Midway across the island, San Gervasio is the only excavated Maya site on Cozumel. With several small temples connected by sacbeob, or long white roads, it was one of the many independent city-states that survived the fall of Chichén Itzá, flourishing between 1200 AD and 1650 AD. As part of a larger nature reserve the site is worth a visit for the numerous birds and butterflies you can spot early in the morning or late in the day.

Another place to visit is Xcaret, a surprisingly pleasant theme park: it offers all the Yucatán’s attractions in one handy place, with a museum, a tropical aquarium, a “Maya village”, a beach, some small authentic ruins, pools and more than a kilometre of subterranean rivers down which you can swim, snorkel or float. On the other hand, neighbouring Xplor is dedicated to ziplines and other outdoor adventure.

Next to a whole host of other aquatic wildlife, the calm waters off Cozumel are frequented by scores of southern stingrays, a marine dweller known to display an endearingly friendly disposition towards humans. And if you’d now like to get up close and personal with these cute critters yourself, all you have to do is join this entertaining tour. Begin with a 5-minute taxi ride to Stingray Beach, then learn how to stay safe in the water and finally head for the saltwater enclosure to meet the lovable “sea kittens” in person. As you wade into the water, groups of stingrays will naturally begin to flock around your legs – they know there’s food to be had and you’re the source. After feeding the rays, you’ll move on to a larger protected section of Stingray Beach, the sSWEkelling area. Once you’ve got your gear on it’s time to experience the marine wonderland live and direct. You’ll find the water is alive with stingrays, brightly coloured parrot fish, starfish, crabs, needlefish and even the occasional octopus, a true master of underwater camouflage. You’ll also have time to spend on dry land at Stingray Beach’s Seaside Club. Enjoy a complimentary drink and do try out the water trampoline – a firm favourite with kids of all ages. Your brief return journey to the ship then brings your tour to a close. Please note: guests must be at least 4 years of age to take part in the tour. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for pregnant women and guests with pre-existing back/neck injuries, cardiac or respiratory conditions. The price of the tour includes water/soda as well as use of sSWEkel equipment and storage facilities. Guests are recommended to bring a beach towel, biodegradable sunscreen and a hat. The rules governing use of the water trampoline must be strictly observed. In the interest of both guest and animal safety, using cameras will not be permitted during the encounter portion of the tour. Photo CDs of your “Everybody Loves Rays!” experience are available for purchase. Some of the proceeds from CD sales go towards increasing the scientific knowledge base regarding stingrays as well as towards a conservation and breeding programme for endangered species like the Yucatán parrot, the green iguana and Cozumel’s only coral nursery programme.

You will be led by the biologist’s team member who spearheads the Save the endangered Sea Turtle Program. Cozumel boasts the most Sea Turtle nests per kilometre than any other area in Mexico by a 3 to 1 ratio. Every evening the turtles hatch and make their way to the sea. This is a natural process, but in the frenzy of the nest only about 80% of the hatched turtles actually have the stamina and jolt of energy to climb out. On this tour we backtrack the previous evenings events and help rescue the 20% of turtles who were not ready for the dash to the sea and recover these turtles until their inner-organs are mature enough to be released by digging them out. This process is extremely heart-warming and satisfactory as you will be in direct contact with nature and you will be directly involved in saving the little life of the turtle so it may have a true chance at life. Your next stop is at a Beach Restaurant on the Eastern side of the Island where you will have one of Cozumel’s most famous dishes: Caribbean Lobster! You will have a sit down lunch at one of the landmark beaches of Cozumel and enjoy the traditional delicacy that is so true to this culture. Then it will be time to head to the comfort of your ship. Please Note: Guests are advised that digging out the turtle hatchlings may involve working on your knees or lying down on the sand. To avoid injuring any baby turtles, the digging process is entirely by hand (no shovels, trowels or other tools may be used). Although female turtles usually dig their nests relatively close to the water, some places may be easier to dig in than others. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothes, a hat, high-factor sunscreen and comfortable shoes for walking on the beach. This tour is available only during the Summer 2017 calls to Cozumel, Mexico starting from July 5th, 2017 through Nov. 8th, 2017. Guests will be required to sign a waiver which may only be available in English.

Situated just off Mexico’s south-eastern coast, the island of Cozumel presents a winning blend of culture, history, scenery, fabulous beaches and great shopping opportunities. In short, it’s got the lot – and you can explore some of its most attractive features on this half-day tour. Your outing begins with an air-conditioned coach ride to your first stop: the Discover Mexico Park, a complex that represents some of Mexico’s most iconic landmarks in perfect scale models. After visiting the park’s museum, complete with a special video experience room. Continue your journey to a unique place for a sensory experience at The Mayan Cacao Company where you will learn about the history of the Chocolate, its manufacturing process and you'll also participate in a demonstration with a delicious tasting at the end. Then you’ll move on to Cozumel’s oldest settlement at El Cedral, a former hub of Mayan civilisation and the site of Mexico’s first Catholic church service. With views of untamed beaches to enjoy as you round the island’s southern tip, you’ll then head for your fourth destination, the natural limestone bridge of El Mirador. View, photograph and even walk over the unusual rock before moving on to a wonderful “tequileria” to see how tequila, Mexico’s national drink, is made. The traditional process starts with the indispensable agave plants and ends with the finished product, of which you can then savour a sample. You’ll be free to decide whether to return to the ship using the transport provided at the appointed time or remain in town for longer and return at your own expense. Take some time off the ship to explore the beauty of Cozumel on a tour that begins with a narrated sail around the island on a fast catamaran, with views of the scenic shoreline and the aquamarine blue of the water to savour on the way. Back on dry land again, a guided transfer on an air-conditioned vehicle will then see you reach El Cedral via the emerald green of the jungle. The village of El Cedral, Cozumel’s oldest settlement, is home to a landmark church, the remains of an old Mayan temple destroyed by Christian missionaries and an array of local artisans selling their wares. You’ll have time to bargain for a souvenir before you move on again to the south of Cozumel and the scenic El Mirador outlook point for a photo stop. Miles of deserted beaches then follow along the west coast of the island until you reach Cozumel town to visit a museum with artefacts of the island’s modern history. To wrap up, you can choose to be returned to the ship or stay in town and take a taxi back (at additional expense). Please note: guests are recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and high-factor sunscreen as well as to bring cash to cover additional expenses.

    Mexico

Under the shade of a sombrero
Under the shade of a sombrero

One of the world’s great civilizations, Mexico is a great cruise destination with its melange of Mesoamerican cultures, modern indigenous tribes and Spanish traditions; it’s a vibrant modern economy too, the biggest in Latin America after Brazil.

Mexico’s landscapes are just as diverse, from the shimmering blue coastline of Baja California and the iconic cactus-strewn deserts of the north, to the Mayan villages and gorgeous palm-smothered beaches of the Caribbean Sea. You can climb volcanoes, watch whales, swim underground and tour tequila farms during your holiday to Mexico.

And sprinkled throughout you’ll find richly adorned colonial churches, giant ancient pyramids and a sophisticated cuisine that has little in common with the world of nachos and burritos. Despite the inevitable influence of the US and close links with the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, the country remains resolutely individual. The music that fills the plazas in the evenings, the buildings that circle around them, even the smells emanating from a row of taco carts: they all leave you without any doubt about where you are.

Many first-time visitors are surprised to find that Mexico is far from being a “developing” nation: the country has a robust economy, the world’s fourteenth largest, a remarkably thorough and efficient internal transport system and a vibrant contemporary arts and music scene.
