Pointe à Pitre

The notes and scents of the island

One of the memories that many visitors to Guadeloupe in Pointe-à-Pitre retain is the flavours and sounds of its many small markets. For example, the Central Market, also called the Saint Antoine Market, located on a square of the same name in full city centre; the Flower Market on Gourbeyre Square, in front of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul; and the Keruland Port Market on the Caribbean Sea, right in front of your MSC cruise ship.
A visit to the Guadeloupe National Park, designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, will also leave a mark. Located in the south of Basse-Terre, the park holds one of the most beautiful woods in the Antilles, which can be reached by following the Route de l’Habituée, which cuts the park in two.

Next, tackle an excursion to the Soufrière Volcano and to the three waterfalls of Carbet nearby. The second waterfall is the most accessible. One hundred and ten meters in height, it can be admired from a suspended bridge. If you are interested in Basse-Terre archaeological sites, visit the Roches Gravées (Engraved Rocks) located in Trois-Rivières, in the southern part of the island; or those in Plessis in the north. Or grant yourself an excursion to the Désirade geological reserve. French relics can be admired at Fort Delgres, built in 1650 to defend Guadeloupe from the British.

Passengers of an MSC cruise will also be able to admire the Domaine de Valombreuse Botanical Garden. Inserted between the mountains and the sea, it is a riot of tropical plants and flowers, which only a few other gardens in the world can equal. To get a full taste of the spirit of the island, make sure to visit the Musée du Rhum in Sainte-Rose during your stay. Housed in the Reimonenq Distillery, it reveals the techniques and secrets of the making of rum. You can view a series of historical tools used for cutting, working and transforming sugar cane into rum, as well as old incisions, objects and documents.

    HAV & SOL

    GUA22

Give yourself a chance to turn part-time discoverer on this entertaining outing that will first see you leave your ship and board a comfortable catamaran at the pier of Pointe-à-Pitre. You’ll then sail along the scenic south-eastern coast of Grand-Terre to the tiny Îlet du Gosier, which sits opposite Gosier town just out to sea. Since 2003, the uninhabited coral isle has been under the protection of the “Conservatoire du littoral”, a French coastal protection agency founded in 1975. Once the catamaran has dropped anchor, you can choose whether to swim the short distance or be taken to the islet by rigid inflatable boat. Apart from a lighthouse, the only man-made structure, the island is all about the powdery sand and the beautifully clear turquoise water. • SCENIC DRIVE & WALK TO THE CARBET WATERFALLS

    NATURLIGA UNDERVERK

    GUA11

The southern end of Basse-Terre island is dominated by the La Grande Soufrière volcano, which rises to a majestic height of 1,647 m amid Guadeloupe’s lush green rainforest. It is also where you’ll find the gorgeous Carbet Waterfalls, the main highlight of this tour. After boarding a comfortable coach at the port of Pointe-à-Pitre, your journey to the famous falls – consisting of three separate cascades – will first take you through the Capesterre-Belle-Eau region to the island’s Hindu temple, a testament to Guadeloupe’s multi-ethnic society. A photo stop will be made at this colourfully decorated place of worship, following which the picturesque route continues right into the rainforest and to the 110-m mid-level fall. An exhilarating walk will then take you to the viewing platform, which affords truly breathtaking views of the cascade as it gushes through the dense vegetation. The sun glinting on the sparkling water coming over the mountainside is a perfect photo moment, so do remember to bring your camera. Your tour then draws to a leisurely close with your scenic journey back to your ship. Please note: for reasons of safety, direct access to the falls and the pool has been prohibited, by order of the National Park Authorities, since 2004. The tour is considered to be unsuitable for guests with mobility problems. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Accessing the viewing platform involves going up/down approx. 400 steps.

        STADSUTFLYKT

        GUA19

This tour of Grande-Terre island begins with a short drive to one of Guadeloupe’s key historical monuments, the mid-18th-century Fort Fleur d’épée. Situated high above the coastal town of Le Gosier on the southern shores of Grand-Terre, the fortress once played a critical role in the Seven Years’ War between France and Great Britain, but is now used to host temporary art exhibitions. Moving on, you’ll then stop in Le Gosier itself for lovely views of one of Guadeloupe’s most popular snapshot scenes: the Îlet du Gosier. Located just a stone’s throw out to sea, this tiny coral isle is home to swaying palm trees and a pretty lighthouse. Leaving Le Gosier, you will reach Sainte Anne for a pleasant stop at the Village Artisanal on the sea front. As you then make your way through Sainte-Anne’s lushly vegetated Le Grands Fonds region, you’ll be heading for a final photo stop at the cemetery, famed for its black-and-white checkerboard tombs, before returning to your ship.

        Guadeloupe

        Charming verdant bays
        Charming verdant bays

Try a vacation in Guadeloupe for a taste of French Caribbean. The archipelago of Guadeloupe appears simply stunning to visitors arriving on a Cruise of the Caribbean. Its turquoise waters are the perfect setting for water sports. The large Grande Anse in Les Saintes is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

You can reach the beaches by crossing fields dotted with ruins of ancient mills and reach splendid landscapes like Pointe Vigie, where the waters drop down 84 metres into the Atlantic Ocean. And with a tour to Port d’Enfer, 25 km from Le Moule, you can admire the small lagoon created by ocean and engulfed by rocks and meadows. If you want to see the pink sand beaches or the volcanic sands, you should go to Basse Terre, if instead you’re looking for wild nature, you should go to Désirade, the island shaped like a cigar.

Don’t miss the excursion to Marie Galante, where you find the most beautiful beaches. And you must try the local cuisine: Caribbean and African ingredients, with spices from the most distant lands. Amongst the recommended foods are: Désirade cashew nut preserve; the Tourments d’Amour, sweets made in Les Saintes (the archipelago within the archipelago) with coconut jam, puff pastry, cane sugar, flower, custard (optional) and eggs; or a refreshing coconut sorbet.
