Harrison's Cave is a magnificent natural phenomenon, quite in a class of its own. Formed from a particularly beautiful type of crystallized limestone, this stunning cavern is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular natural attractions in the entire Caribbean. Though created over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, Harrison's Cave has only been accessible to the general public for some 15 years. The first recorded history of Harrison's Cave dates back to 1796, but it then lay undisturbed until it was rediscovered in 1970 by Ole Sorenson and developed by the Government of Barbados. After checking in at the Visitors Center, you will be taken into a theatre where you will watch a short film on the formation of Barbados. Then you will board the electric tram that will take you down into the cave. As the driver pulls away, your guide will commence her commentary and you are on your way to a memorable experience - magnificent chambers, incredible stalactites and stalagmites, bubbling streams, tumbling cascades, plunging waterfalls and emerald pools. Throughout the almost mile long cave the flowstone covered walls glisten in the lights as the calcite laden waters drip down from the roof. At various points the tram stops to allow passengers to disembark and have a closer look at the beauty at hand. Just remember how long it has taken for these precious features to for and please do not touch them! One stop takes place at the lowest point in the cave, where a waterfall plunges into an emerald pool. Flash photography is permitted - not video - so take your camera.

Treat yourself to half a day of exploring some of Barbados’ must-sees from the comfort of a restored, open-sided “jitney” bus, once common on the island’s sugarcane plantations. Your outing begins in Bridgetown with a drive-by look at the parliament buildings, the statue of Lord Nelson on National Heroes Square and Independence Square en route to your first stop, the Blackwood’s Screw Dock and Bridgetown Careenage. Dating back to the late 19th century, this is the world’s oldest surviving ship lift and was where ships would come for repairs and cleaning. You’ll have some time to sunbathe at the adjacent beach, sip a complimentary drink at the bar and browse through the artefacts at the nearby Maritime Museum. Accompanied by music, unlimited drinks and amusing anecdotes told by your tour guide on board the jitney, you’ll then pass through the Garrison Historic Area – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with magnificent 18th-/19th-century buildings, a racetrack and the world’s finest collection of cannons – on your way to Accra Beach, a trendy coastal strip with restaurants and shops, the beach is a great place to hang out and relax. Next up, the jitney will take you to Carlisle Bay Beach, a perfect beach spot with stunning turquoise waters and excellent views of the sweeping harbour coastline. Please note: guests are recommended to wear light, casual clothing and comfortable shoes.

St. John's Parish Church is perched on a cliff, 800 feet above sea level, overlooking coastal St. John and the Atlantic Ocean. The present building was constructed in 1836, after the hurricane of 1831 destroyed the one built in 1660 and also contains an interesting sculpture depicting the Madonna and Child with the infant St. John. Your Tour will descend into Bathsheba where you will have a brief stop. A visit to Barbados is not complete unless you visit the idyllic spot. Located near the centre of the Island, in the parish of St. Thomas, at an elevation of more than 1000 feet above sea level sits Highland Adventure Centre. On the well maintained grounds stands a gazebo and a spacious deck, along with a well-stocked bar. From here the view of the East Coast is truly breathtaking! The pounding Atlantic surf in the distance, contrasts with the unspoiled beauty of nearby Mount Hillaby, which at 1138 feet above sea level is the highest point on the island. You get the feeling as though you're sitting on top of the world. The ideal place for a photo stop on tour.

Step aboard your air-conditioned coach for a scenic drive through the rolling hills of the countryside to St. John's Parish Church which is perched on a cliff, 800 feet above sea level, overlooking coastal St. John and the Atlantic Ocean. The church contains an interesting sculpture depicting the Madonna and Child with the infant St. John. The graveyard contains the tomb of Ferdinand Paleologus, a descendent of the Byzantine Imperial family, who died in Barbados in 1678 after being a resident for over 20 years. Continue on to Orchid World, which sits on 6 acres of land, some 800 feet above sea level in the central parish of St. George. A meandering path winds its way between beautiful outcrops of coral, rock gardens, cool shady gullies and ponds. The Orchids themselves are quite spectacular. Wonderful photo opportunities abound for the professional and amateur photographer. Your last stop is at Sunbury House dates back to 1650. The house was destroyed by fire in 1995, and was gracefully restored and re-opened in 1996. It possesses one of the country's superior collections of antiques. The cellars, originally used for storing yams and other root vegetables grown on the plantation, now house a unique collection of antique carriages, the largest collection in the Caribbean, as well as many items used in the domestic life of the plantation. Sunbury Plantation House, located in the tranquil St. Philip countryside is a living monument to plantation life of bygone era, carefully restored and lovingly cherished by its owners for posterity, for the enjoyment of generations to come.

Barbados

Food, wine and rum to the borders of the Atlantic
Food, wine and rum to the borders of the Atlantic

During a Caribbean MSC cruise you will disembark in Bridgetown, Barbados.

For more than three centuries Barbados was a British colony and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it retains something of a British feel: the place names, the cricket, horse-racing and polo, Anglican parish churches and even a hilly district known as Scotland. But the Britishness can be exaggerated, for this is a distinctly West Indian country, covered by a patchwork of sugarcane fields and dotted with tiny rum shops. Calypso is the music of choice, flying fish the favoured food, and influences are as likely to emanate from America as from Europe. Mean while the people of Barbados, known as Bajans, are as warm and welcoming as you’ll find anywhere. Among the more traditional attractions of a travel to Barbados are the island’s evocative plantation houses, colourful botanical gardens, and proud military forts and signal stations. The capital Bridgetown makes for a lively place to visit, with an excellent national museum and great bars and clubs.

Then there are the beaches, from the often-crowded strips such as Accra Beach and Mullins Bay to tiny but superb patches of palm-fringed sand like Bottom Bay in the southeast.
