Palermo

Traditions, culture and cuisine in Trinacria

A holiday to Italy with MSC Cruises is the perfect chance to visit the regional capital of Sicily. A bustling, lively, noisy port, Palermo yet holds an unrivalled display of Norman art and architecture and Baroque churches, combined with a warren of medieval streets and markets.

With Sicily’s greatest concentration of sights, and the biggest historic centre in Italy bar Rome, Palermo is a complex, multilayered port that can easily feel overwhelming if you try to do or see too much in one Mediterranean cruise visit.

The best thing to do here is just to wander as the fancy takes you, sifting through Palermo’s jumbled layers of crumbling architecture, along deserted back alleys, then suddenly emerging in the midst of an ebullient street market.

Select an area (La Kalsa, or the sprawling markets of Ballarò), and enjoy your cruise excursion.

Across Via Maqueda is Piazza Pretoria, floodlit at night to highlight the nude figures of its great central fountain, with its racy sixteenth-century Florentine design. The piazza also holds the restored town hall, while towering above both square and fountain is the massive flank of Santa Caterina, Sicilian Baroque at its most exuberant, every inch of the enormous interior covered in a wildly decorative relief-work.

On the south of the island, a couple of kilometres below modern Agrigento, a series of Doric temples – the most captivating of Sicilian Greek remains and a grouping unique outside Greece – are strung out along a ridge facing the sea. Greek colonists surrounded it with a mighty wall, formed in part by a higher ridge on which stood the acropolis. The southern limit of the ancient city was a second, lower ridge and in the fifth century BC it was here, in the “Valle dei Templi”, that the city architects erected their sacred buildings.

Of the many must-sees that Sicily has to offer, one of the most notable are the archaeological remains of several ancient civilisations found at Segesta, now a part of the municipality called Calatafimi-Segesta, which you will reach after a pleasant coach ride. Situated a little way inland from Trapani amid green hills and fields, Segesta is home to a superbly preserved Doric temple, complete with elegant Doric columns, which dates back to the 5th century B.C.. However, the fact that the edifice lacks a roof is not down to the ravages of time – it was simply never built as the temple was left unfinished by its Elymian makers. The adjacent amphitheatre, built during the Hellenistic age on a hilltop overlooking the Gulf of Castellamare and restored by the Romans, is next on the tour. As you walk to the theatre, look out for archaeological evidence of the city’s former appearance. Situated at the top of Mount Erice lies the town of the same name, built on the site of ancient Eryx, a largely Hellenized town founded by the Phoenicians and your next destination. Next to providing stupendous views of Trapani and the Sicilian coastline from its mountaintop location, the charming town of Erice is a winning blend of myths, legends and actual history. Quaint cobbled streets, beautiful houses and cool courtyards are just some of the town’s many delights, which also include the 14th-century Mother Church – that you will visit – and the Castle of Venus that you will admire from outside. The coach drive to Palermo ends your Sicilian outing. Please note: this tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair as it involves long periods of walking on uneven ground. Conservative attire recommended for visiting sites of religious importance.

Join us as tour through the streets and square of this bustling Sicilian town. Stop at one of Palermo’s key monuments: the Palatine Chapel. The Chapel was commissioned by Roger II of Sicily in 1132 and took eight years to complete. Upon entering the site one is struck by the elegance and the luminosity of the breathtaking mosaics which cover the ceiling and the dome. We will see more of Palermo’s architectural gems, including the Norman Palace (exterior only) and the Cathedral (exterior only). Do not miss the opportunity to look around the wonderful “Capo” Market, Palermo’s largest produce and fish market. We will end our tour via the “Teatro Massimo” (exterior only) before returning to the port. Please note: this tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair.

A coach-based sightseeing tour of Palermo’s key landmarks begins this half-day outing. You’ll be following a route that includes such highlights as the 19th-century Teatro Politeama on Piazza Ruggero Settimo, then the Teatro Massimo opera house, which opened its doors in 1897. Next up is the Baroque Piazza Vigliena, also known as the Quattro Canti due to its octagonal shape, followed by the 18th-/19th-century Palazzo D’Orleans. A short photo stop is then scheduled in the royal Parco della Favorita at Casina Cinese, an 18th-century example of Italian architectural chinoiserie. Last up, you’ll move on to Mondello, one of Palermo’s most appealing quarters located between two headlands. Free time will be yours here to explore or relax on the beach. The coach journey back to the ship then concludes the tour. Please note: this tour is not recommended for guests using a wheelchair and operates from June until the end of September only.

A cruise to Italy is an emotional roller coaster. Rome is a tremendous city quite unlike any other, and in terms of historical sights outstrips everywhere else in the country by some way.

Liguria, the small coastal province along the north-west coast, has long been known as the “Italian Riviera” and is accordingly crowded with sun-seekers for much of the summer.
In Veneto the main focus of interest is, of course, Venice: a unique city, and every bit as beautiful as its reputation would suggest. Tuscany in central Italy represents perhaps the most commonly perceived image of the country, with its classic rolling countryside and the art-packed towns of Florence and Pisa.

The south proper begins with the region of Campania. Its capital, Naples, is a unique, unforgettable city, the spiritual heart of the Italian south. Puglia, the “heel” of Italy, has underrated pleasures, too, notably the landscape of its Gargano peninsula and the souk-like qualities of its capital, Bari.

As for Sicily, the island is really a place apart, with a wide mixture of attractions ranging from some of the finest preserved Hellenistic treasures in Europe, to a couple of Italy’s most appealing Mediterranean beach resorts in Taormina and Cefalù, not to mention some gorgeous upland scenery.
