The Old Liburna

Upon reaching the port of Livorno (Leghorn) during an MSC cruise in the Mediterranean, you will find a lively town with a glorious past; its name it thought to derive from liburna, an ancient Roman vessel.

Boasting some historical monuments – Old Fortress, New Fortress, Marzocco Tower – that have survived Fascist demolitions and Allied bombings, the city is a good starting point for a discovery tour of the Tuscan food and wine culture: fruits, vegetables, typical dishes of the traditional sea and land cuisines and, of course, wines such as Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, a wine of great regional importance. One of the excursions proposed by MSC Cruises will take you to Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance. Along its streets strolled great artists and writers such as Dante, Brunelleschi and Donatello, among others. Let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of its historical buildings, such as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower or Duomo), a clear example of Gothic art with its pink, white and green marble exterior and an interior decorated with frescoes by Giorgio Vasari. The Uffizi Gallery, on the other hand, is one of the most important museums in the world, housing masterpieces by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Raffaello and Tiziano, to name a few. It is impossible not to be enchanted by the magic of Ponte Vecchio (the Old Bridge), the majesty of Piazza della Signoria and the elegance of the Basilica di Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross). Another excursion is dedicated to Pisa, the birth city of Galileo Galilei. The city is famous for its Tower, a leaning bell tower of white stone facing Piazza dei Miracoli, which also hosts the Cathedral and Baptistery.

The former was designed by the architects Buscheto and Rainaldo and completed at the end of the 12th century, while construction of the latter began in the second half of the 12th century. Its architectural lines are similar to those of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Although “Cinque Terre” is Italian for five lands, the name actually refers to the five picturesque villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore that sit like little jewels along the Ligurian coastline and together count as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rugged and unspoiled Cinque Terre region is your destination on this all-day tour, which begins with a 1.5-hour coach ride to La Spezia where a specialized guide will meet you and from where you will continue to Portovenere, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Your guide will tell the story of this enchanting fishing village as you admire the panorama that inspired Byron and other Italian and international poets as a muse. You will have some free time to walk along the sea and explore the cosy streets before boarding a boat for a leisurely boat tour along the coast that intends to celebrate the region’s incredible natural beauty and its well-loved ancient traditions. You will reach Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the Cinque Terre villages. You will have some free time in the historical centre, home to the early 14th-century Church of San Giovanni Battista. Explore the town or perhaps have lunch in one of the many cafés and restaurants (not included in the price of the tour) before the tour then draws to a close with your train ride to Levanto and then with a coach drive to Livorno. Please note: this excursion is only for transit guests in Livorno port and is not suitable for guests with mobility problems or using a wheelchair. We suggest taking a hat and wearing sunscreen during the summer months. Should adverse weather conditions prevail, a train ride may replace the boat trip; have the final tour itinerary reconfirmed during your cruise.

This two-in-one tour will see you spend a day visiting both Florence and Pisa, with lovely views of the Tuscan landscape thrown in during periods of transit. A relaxing 2-hour coach ride begins your outing, taking you first to the gorgeous city of Florence to visit its key landmark: the mid-15th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The last architectural feature to be added to the Gothic-Renaissance building was its impressive dome, finally completing the structure after around 140 years of building work. You’ll then have time to do some shopping or have lunch (at extra cost) on your own, after which you’ll be transferred to the coast en route to Pisa, the birthplace of Galileo Galilei, the 17th-century scientist who clashed with the Catholic Church over how our solar system works. A photo opportunity at Piazza dei Miracoli, home to the famous Leaning Tower, and a visit to the 13th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta then follow, after which the scenic return journey to Livorno brings the tour to a close. Please note: this excursion is only for transit guests in Livorno port. Guests will be met by tour guides on arrival in both Florence and Pisa. Conservative attire recommended for visiting places of religious importance. Guests using a wheelchair are advised that they must be accompanied by a paying helper to provide assistance with getting on and off the coach and that wheelchairs must be collapsible/foldable since the coach has neither a ramp nor a lift. Italy

        History, gastronomy and fashion
        History, gastronomy and fashion

A cruise to Italy is an emotional roller coaster. Rome is a tremendous city quite unlike any other, and in terms of historical sights outstrips everywhere else in the country by some way.

Liguria, the small coastal province along the north-west coast, has long been known as the “Italian Riviera” and is accordingly crowded with sun-seekers for much of the summer.
In Veneto the main focus of interest is, of course, Venice: a unique city, and every bit as beautiful as its reputation would suggest. Tuscany in central Italy represents perhaps the most commonly perceived image of the country, with its classic rolling countryside and the art-packed towns of Florence and Pisa.

The south proper begins with the region of Campania. Its capital, Naples, is a unique, unforgettable city, the spiritual heart of the Italian south. Puglia, the “heel” of Italy, has underrated pleasures, too, notably the landscape of its Gargano peninsula and the souk-like qualities of its capital, Bari.

As for Sicily, the island is really a place apart, with a wide mixture of attractions ranging from some of the finest preserved Hellenistic treasures in Europe, to a couple of Italy’s most appealing Mediterranean beach resorts in Taormina and Cefalù, not to mention some gorgeous upland scenery.
