Cruise tourism makes an enormous contribution to economies around the world and its importance was recognised during the recent Global Youth Tourism held in Sorrento, Italy. Organised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), this was the first ever event of its kind and brought together 130 young people from over 60 countries from 27 June to 3 July.

The aim of the summit was to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and knowledge and to empower youth to play an active role in the tourism sector. Seasoned professionals from different arms of the tourism industry interacted with participants, and among the most visible players were the MSC Foundation, MSC Cargo and MSC Cruises.

From workshops on knot tying to practical experience on a ship bridge simulator to brainstorming concepts for Teens Club activities on the new ship MSC World Europa, the week was packed with stimulating and educational activities. We opened the doors of the MSC Training Centre and ran an intensive and fun programme called Shipping & Tourism as Drivers of a Sustainable Future where attendees were introduced to the advanced technology MSC has incorporated into its ships and processes as part of our commitment to sustainable cruising.

On that note, UNWTO General Secretary Zurab Pololikashvili conferred the role of UNWTO Ambassador for Sustainable Tourism on Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the MSC Group Cruise Division and MSC Foundation Chair of the Executive Committee, in recognition of his contribution to sustainable tourism.

One of the most appreciated activities was a full-day boat trip to the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area during which the young guests got up close and personal with marine conservation in its authentic environment. This trip was a joint initiative with marine conservation NGO Marevivo, and marine biologists led sea watching and snorkelling activities.

As guardians of the future, the 60 youngsters were brimming with fresh energy, vision and a real sense of responsibility when it comes to the impact tourism has on communities, ecosystems and economies. It was a joy to observe their passion and hear their ideas on how to take concrete steps to shape the future of tourism.

"Restoring the health of the sea and its inhabitants is a vital priority for the MSC Foundation and youth education plays a key role. MSC is therefore delighted to have contributed to the tremendous success of the first Global Youth Tourism Summit, which provides the perfect platform to nurture future leaders in sustainable tourism". - Daniela Picco, MSC Foundation Executive Director.
