MSC Cruises’ journey toward net-zero emissions is accelerating.

MSC World Europa will launch in October with a 150-kilowatt solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) demonstrator onboard, a powerful energy conversion device that will generate auxiliary power to deliver significant carbon emissions reductions compared to traditional internal combustion engines. The demonstrator will act as a testbed for the development of fuel cell technology on contemporary ships and offers the potential to enable hybrid propulsion solutions in the future. MSC World Europa will also be our first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered ship. LNG largely eliminates sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions and particulate matter in the exhaust, reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by up to 85%, and carbon dioxide (CO2) by up to 25%. The new design is anticipated to perform 47% better than its required Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). MSC Cruises’ second LNG powered ship, MSC Euribia, will enter service in mid-2023 and the construction at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard in Saint-Nazaire of the third ship – ‘World Class II’ - is due to start early next year.

These developments and many others will enable MSC Cruises to meet its ambitious commitment of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and exceed the interim target of a 40% reduction in carbon emissions intensity by 2030.
